frontofbicycle

August 18th, 2018

During a recent visit to Basel, Switzerland, I was very happy to meet some of the organisers of the arts organisation frontofbicycle, and to hear about their work with artists based in the city. The group brings together and represents a diverse range of painters, photographers and sculptors, and hosts a number of exhibitions throughout the year, each in a different venue.

After being invited to join the group as International Guest Artist in Residence, I’m very much looking forward to exhibiting with them this November – dates and venue to be announced.

Many thanks to all involved for their support.

Waterstones exhibition

June 7th, 2018

Very pleased to confirm my forthcoming London exhibition at Waterstones bookshop, Bloomsbury, featuring a selection of literary portraits made for Terry Victor’s 2017 Edinburgh show, Well Thumbed. Over the coming months I’ll add to the series, focusing on a few of the many celebrated writers with specific Bloomsbury connections.

Making these pictures is very different from anything else I’ve done – working from photographs, paintings and other sources (or, in the case of Gwerful Mechain, pictured, for whom no contemporary image exists, from my imagination) – and I’m thrilled that what started as a fun side project with Terry has taken on a life of its own. Very grateful to Waterstones for their support, and looking forward to putting the show together.

The exhibition will run from October 29th to November 24th, and will also feature a selection of dance paintings.

Private view on November 2nd, 6.30 to 8.30pm.

Festival workshop

May 19th, 2018

Thoroughly enjoyed this year’s portraiture workshop at Machynlleth Comedy Festival, during which a dozen artists sketched extraordinary comedian/clown Elf Lyons in an array of poses – some rather dynamic, reflecting the physicality of the sitter and often making the session as much about figure drawing as portraiture.

We had a wide range of experience among the group, from workshop regulars to others who hadn’t drawn since they’d been at school, and as ever a lot of beautiful work was created – including from our youngest ever participant, thirteen-year-old Ruby (bottom left).

Hats off to all! And thanks as always to the festival and the Tabernacle Gallery, whose studio we use.

Elf is currently touring her show Swan, which is huge fun. For information about this and much else, see here.

Art on a Postcard picture

April 22nd, 2018

Here’s the little drawing I made for last month’s Art on a Postcard auction for the Hepatitis C Trust. It’s called Angharad Harrop 14, is 10.5cm x 15cm, and refers back to a painting I made of Angharad in Llandudno in 2016. I originally tried, and repeatedly failed, to create the image in watercolour, but when running out of time reverted to a stick of charcoal. Hats off to anyone who can make watercolour do as it’s told.

Returning to an earlier composition was a curious thing to do, particularly as the original painting – at 110cm x 130cm – was substantially bigger, but it was an interesting exercise, and one I may return to in the future.

Very happy that the picture sold.

Art on a Postcard

March 7th, 2018

Very happy to be contributing to Art on A Postcard’s secret auction fundraiser for the Hepatitis C Trust – the national campaigning organisation run by and for people affected by hepatitis C.

Pictures will be exhibited at The Other Art Fair in London from March 22nd to 25th, though artists are all anonymous until after the event there on the final day.

Lots of work, and a great cause. Do have a look.
